The typical rule of thumb is to put a call to action statement at the end of any piece of content, whether it be a 1,000 word blog post, or a two-line meta description. The idea is that when a reader is finished and wondering where the Internet will take them next, your are encouraging them to keep hanging out with you. You can sprinkle call-to-action statements elsewhere in your content, but make sure you are not bombarding people with commands, or encouraging them to travel elsewhere prematurely.

What Should You Avoid with Call to Action Statements?

There is a subtle art to writing great call-to-action statements. It might be easier to define it by telling you what not to do.

  • Don’t hide it – Lots of call-to-action statements use bolded text or different colors to highlight their presence.
  • Don’t make it confusing – Make sure your audience knows exactly what is going to happen when they “Click Here.”
  • Don’t make it a command – A call to action is about enticing people to follow along, not telling them what to do. Your audience should understand how taking a certain action is going to benefit them.
  • Don’t send them nowhere – The call to action is the easy part, creating the page where they land is the hard part. Make sure that wherever you send your traffic is a place they want to be.
